There are things we avoid simply because we’re afraid that stepping towards them might mean leaving a part of ourselves behind.
For years, neutral colours felt that way to me. Colour has always been such a strong part of my visual language that I wondered whether, without it, my work would still feel like mine. Then I found the rhythm of this piece.
The title comes from a line in Robyn Davidson’s "Tracks":
“I had learnt to use my fears as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks.”
I loved that book for its vastness, the solitude and the pull of the desert, and that feeling found its way on this canvas.
This is a statement piece rather than a neutral painting. From across the room, its sandy palette feels calm and expansive. Come closer and the intricate linework begins to reveal itself, giving the surface movement, depth and detail.
A work for a space that doesn’t need more noise to hold your attention.
